GENESIS (c.) (1.) RUN AWAY!!!

RUN AWAY!!!
If you are savvy (and/or fortunate) enough to make it to this part of your first three moves, pat yourself on the back.  Just kidding.  Don't waste time like that.  You are now faced with the option to FLEE the area or STAY and defend a building from the hordes of undead.

You may choose to RUN AWAY.  This is a solid option for a lot of people!  After all, to stay and defend requires weapons, people you trust, and a building that is ideal for defending (this will be detailed in GENESIS (c.)(2.)).  Running away is a good option if you don't have many weapons, much ammunition, or a team of survivors you can trust to have your back.  So what exactly is the proper procedure for "Running Away" without being a total pussy about it?

Step 1.  Select a vehicle big enough to include you, include any supplies you have, and plow through oodles of shambling zombies who will inevitably stand in the middle of the road.
Step 2.  Keep your cool!  This is a recurring concept throughout the entirety of The Zombie Apocalypse.  If you need me to constantly explain why this is important, I don't have much faith in your survival chances.
Step 3.  Get Gas!  Fuel for your vehicle.  Also, a lot of backup generators run on gas, so if you DO have to stop somewhere for the night, and that place has a backup generator, you can fuel it!  Did you know that gasoline is flammable?  That was more a rhetorical question than anything else.  Suffice to say, get extra gas.
Step 4.  Drive safe!  Even if your car is only going 35 miles an hour, you are going 35mph faster than EVERY ZOMBIE AROUND.  There is no use in going 90mph, wasting all your gas, then flipping your car.  That is an epic fail.

Some people suggest that running away like this is the best option.  There is a reasonable case for this, but it still depends entirely on your own situation.  I HIGHLY suggest this option to anybody in a city.  Cities are the RISKIEST places to be during The Zombie Apocalypse and that is attributed in whole to the high population.  This does not mean you HAVE TO flee if you are in a city.  It is most likely your best option though.

When running away, you should have a map on you.  No matter how well you know your home state.  Being from Pennsylvania, I can honestly say I've seen about 75% of my state and would have no problem navigating my way around.  Other states that surround me though, I would NEED a map to get through.  As if getting lost in New Jersey isn't ALREADY a terrible occurrence, imagine it during The Zombie Apocalypse (granted the prospect of driving NJ without NJ drivers on the roads just rings strangely serene to me)!

Another great tactic for this option includes pit stops!  During a zombie outbreak, the idea of pulling over and getting out of the safety of your car may not appeal to you.  However, if done right this is an essential practice to maximize your supply stash.  Stop off in a small town.  The smaller the better (less people in town = less zombies in town after it is overrun)!  Go through the local grocery store for supplies.  Hell, go through the residential houses for supplies!   Zombies are slow.  If you are faster than them, you can take little risks like these.  Keep in mind though, ANY risk is still a risk.  But if you are quick and agile, small expeditions in the proper setting should not be too dangerous and the benefit of extra supplies will outweigh by far the prospect of encountering a few walkers that you have to put some Barry Sanders juke moves on!

Stay tuned for GENESIS (c.)(2.) STAND AND DELIVER!  Coming soon!

  1. What about traffic jams leaving cities? And the necessity of fruit jams to sustain one's self? And the need to pack some good jams to rock out to while running your undead neighbours over? I expect you to address these oversights.

  2. a suggestion -- go with diesel powered vehicles, fuel lasts longer, and backup supplies work for better fire bombs (Molotov Cocktail). Because of the heavier weight of the fuel it tends stay in place a little bit better, although a lighter oil mixed in never hurts anything. Along the initial idea of the idea of diesel would be alot of older generators that also run on diesel, especially the ones in larger buildings (hospital for med. supplies)

  3. Another great installment. I do enjoy the meticulous options you have. Here are my simple questions. Should you aim to kill when hitting the legion of undead or simply get out of their way? How many walking maggot feasts can you plow through?(A couple, dozen, Hordes?) Should you fortify your vehicle to withstand several blows from hitting the walking dead?(Don't want that fuel line to come loose.) How many days/months should you be running for? Should you bring some sort of tubing for siphoning gas? (Considering most gas station's pumps work from electricity.) Where should you be running to? Should you try Highways and Interstates, or country roads? Sorry for the onslaught of my curious mind.

  5. Ian....if there is still enough people alive and on the roads to constitute a traffic jam, count your blessings. Also, drive up the shoulder. Any means necessary. If you find that a road is blocked off, get off that road immediately and pursue a different route.

Jkelly....pretty good tips. Diesel vehicles also have the benefit of converting to vegetable oil vehicles. But that requires proper parts and someone who knows how to convert the engine. But excellent point!

Zombiepicdemic....I say aim to kill, that is the safest way to ensure your safety. No second chances for the undead. Also, the number you can take down depends on your personal physical shape and mental state. Some people may want to destroy ALL zombies and some may feel overwhelming empathy for our former living human type counterparts. The number you can safely manage to fight depends on your weaponry and your team. Fortifying your car is an excellent idea to ensure its durability. However buses and/or big trucks with lifts should be fairly safe to use as a plow. The time you should run for depends on the overall situation. So does your destination. For example, if I was to run away where I live, it would make sense to travel back and forth between towns gathering supplies and thinning hordes. If someone in Philadelphia was to run away, I would suggest flocking to rural parts of the state to these people. It is easier to fight hordes if you are in a location where there is lots of space to move around and lower populations to slaughter. Any road will work, however if you know the area intimately I suggest keeping to back roads to minimize the amount of abandoned/crashed vehicles that may become obstacles.

GMar...yes, that is a solid choice to have in the event that you must escape hordes via water.

Thanks for the great questions and points everyone! I appreciate all these thoughts! Stay tuned for my next addition, should be finished sometime today!
